Maybe. It depends on your definition of mean. That seems par for the course here, though. If it seems like it's mean, it's probably the right thing to do. SOME people, which we will tentatively refer to as "wussies", would disagree, but who cares what they think? Not me!

Occasionally throwing them a hunk of raw meat or providing a spurt of blood is encouraged in hopes of redirecting their attention to the task. Overfeeding should be discouraged.

I'm curious... If one of the goals of MATY is to keep out the BBS sheep like the Carlynn person who started this thread and then threw a hissy fit when people tried to help her, why on earth are folks Google-bombing such mystifying phrases as Death to All Hairy Bellied Nesses and All Pescados Suck? Just wondering. :-*
