What happened to my freaking custom content!!!

This is the second time this happens to me. All of a sudden, for no apparent reason a whole bunch of custom content disappears from the game. Nothing to do with the cc switch, I have that turned off. And beside some of my cc is there, I am just missing a bunch. Floor, wallpaper, objects. And they are gone from the catalog as well. Just as if I had removed them from my download folder, which I obviously did not.
All the stuff that has gone missing seems to be in one folder. Yet the folder has never been moved.
Has this happened to anyone?

I have version V. 4.3 released 30 Oct 2006. I doubt it's relevant however, since the content that disappeared wasn't just the stuff affected by CEP. It was new objects, wallpaper, flooring, ect, basically the content of an entire folder
I have fixed the problem, yet I still don't understand how it happened.
I went into my d/l folder and moved the folder "old farmstead" from EA Games\The Sims 2\Downloads\Lots.Residential to directly at the root of my downloads folder and the content has reappeared. This is very bizarre!

I had to move a lot of sim stuff to the root folder, the objects are fine lower down, but my sim clothing etc is not. :-\

That's a problem that was well known with the original game, but was fixed with University I think. I've been using nested subfolders and some of them were pretty deep without any problems before. I wonder what changed.
And it's more bizarre than that because it worked and then suddenly stopped working.
