Laptop Recommendations?

dragoness:
I had a powerful Alienware "gaming computer" that melted, despite a water-based cooling platform and an extra fan. And by "melted", I mean playing the Sims 2 overheated it to the point that the video card slagged and its melted plastic ruined the motherboard.

If I take a laptop somewhere, it's going to be used for reading eBooks or for internet access.  I can wait until I get home to stir the Pudding.

Isn't a tablet enough for that? Why, for Jupiter's sake, would you need to drag a laptop around?

I know of a really great thing you can do to entertain yourself when away from your desktop PC. It's called a book. It was a fantastic invention in the realms of entertainment discovered many many years ago, and it has recently gone through some radical alterations. Now, not only can you carry a light weight collection of papers which contain words of education, enlightenment and entertainment, but you can also opt for technologically more advanced versions. You can carry an e-reader and have a library at your finger tips. You can opt for a library of audio books on your phone or mp3 player. You could even sell out and get an iPad.
You do not need to be permenantly attached to a computer to enjoy life.

Agreed. I travel from Florida to California almost every week, so I've an average of 4 books in my suitcase and my Kindle in my purse. What if I really, really, really want to play Sims 3?

The "this is what I have! It runs great!" posts are almost useless without specs and game setup. Game settings, CC, Expansions and Stuff Packs, plus the specs on the Laptop would probably be much more helpful, just saying. Google could supply the specs, but not the rest of that info.

OK. You can Google the Asus G73SW. I replaced the primary HDD with a 256GB SSD and I'm using a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (hybrid) as 2nd HD. I've every EP and SP.

IAmTheRad:
I got an Asus K53SV-A1, and it runs The Sims 3 at max settings at 30fps. Of course I use the fps limiter so my computer doesn't melt and use extra processing for The Sims 3.
Specs on my laptop are: i5-2410M, 6GB RAM, GeForce GT 540M. I did have to tweak the gpusetting file in the main Sims 3 folder to make it say I had a '4' for a processor instead of a 2 (I can handle the 4. It's dual core, but quad thread. Laptop runs Shogun 2 at high settings at good speed, for crying out loud!) and the laptop so far has served me well. Sims also says my GPU is a 1. It's also a 4. The GeForce isn't on the list. With a memory of '4' it's assumed the graphics chip would be a 4 as well. Game runs at max anyways so I'm good.

Roux:
+1 to the Asus brand recommendation as a worthwhile gaming laptop. I bought the G60JX last year and as long as I use FPS limiter I have very little lag in TS3. Load time in my 4th-generation legacy world (MSR's Plum Grove) is now up to a few minutes, but once loaded it still plays well. Sometimes I see the blocky white textures when I first load a lot, but they resolve quickly and overall I'm not pounding my head against my desk from impatience.

Heat is an issue, but again, using FPS limiter and quitting after 1-2 hours and allowing the computer to rest keeps it under control. I know a laptop fan will help, but I keep forgetting to get one. I also generally use my laptop placed on a hard surface with it elevated in the back, which alleviates some of the heating issues.

All EPs and SPs installed, nearly all store content, and nearly 700MB of user CC (merged and kept under 100 files total). I play with most graphic settings on high or very high, although I limit my high detail lots to 1.

Basic computer specs (thank you, Speccy):
OS: Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5 @ 2.27GHz
RAM: 4.0GB @ 533MHz
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M
Hard drive: 488GB Seagate ST9500420AS (SATA)

Because I actually own a laptop and I don't have a tablet?  For example?  And most laptops are lightweight enough that you don't have to actually drag them?  You know?
