Weird loading crash- freezes when loading bar is green, looks to continue?

I get the general green screen (loft stuff) and the loading bar rises and I get the little tag lines at the bottom as if nothing is wrong, it reaches the end of the bar and instead of going into the main menu, nothing happens.
I've tried deleting caches, removing all CC, removing user files, everything except a clean uninstall reinstall, because to be honest I can't be bothered. It's too much effort and I don't know if it's worth it, because every other time I play this game it breaks in different ways.
I patched up to the latest version recently, but played the game since with no problems, until I downloaded some custom content which left me with the blue lots problem, I got rid of what I'd just downloaded, and got left with this. I've removed awesome mod since in case that was the problem, still nothing.
I'm playing with the base game, WA and loft stuff currently. My laptop's specs should be adequate, but I've posted them at the bottom in case someone notices a problem.

Since you don't have Ambitions, I assume you're using the old style mod framework located in the game's own folders? If so, when you removed the CC did you also remove the D3DX9_31.dll file from the Game/Bin subfolder? An easy one to overlook, but I don't know if it would cause the problems you're experiencing.

EDIT:
I've fixed it... the weird thing is, my game only works with awesome mod enabled now... that's not normal, is it?
