I have to admit that I rarely take any notice of what mine are discussing. Only recently I noticed a Sim getting all excited about ghosts, waving his arms about and stuff, and I thought that was rather amusing. I wouldn't know a culture icon if I saw one and I don't think I know what the politics ones look like, either. Maybe we need a list of these icons and what they mean? I have a hard time sometimes trying to work out what they're on about.

I only pay attention when they start having the minus signs fly. Otherwise, no, it's not very important what they talk about.

Open the "interests" page, and you will see all the bubbles which are connected to a certain interest. You can make a list in no time...:).

As for Marsha Bruenig- in my game, she's dead. Both of them. I killed the second one because the name alone triggers my gag reflex. The original Marsha, along with Jan Tellerman, Chandler Platz, and anyone named Orlando (who was constantly coming home from school with my sims for 4 generations!) were probably the four most annoying characters in my game.
