I believe these threads could solve your problem with the save files.

Thanks coconnor. I just now got back to this thread after reading that first thread and realized it was trying to save a .backup folder on top of a .backup file. Wow, I can't believe they didn't think of that!
Now that my save issues are put to rest, I hope the .backup files it creates are really usable in a CTD or other error code scenario - because they do happen so often!

You're welcome! I haven't started this nightmare myself yet! Haven't purchased the new expansion pack (I did download a copy of the ISO, but have not done anything with it - still waiting to decide), and have not updated the base game with the patch, so I've just been reading the various threads and observing the issues people are having.
I'm really waiting for Pescado to update the awesomeness, and then I'll make a decision one way or the other.
At least then I will have the benefit of everyone's experience when I finally begin the next step (I should start compiling a step by step list, so that when I'm getting angry & frustrated that it's not working, I can refer to that and save myself the aggravation of having to search all over).

Ah well, I had hoped it was more stable than before, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I almost never get a CTD... it does happen on very rare occasions, but are very few and far between. However, just a half hour with 1.6.6 and sure enough, I get a CTD. It seems a wee bit slower than before, and maybe I'm imagining it, but I think my CPU fan is also running louder than before while playing the game.
One thing I found strange, it said a burglar was on my lot. A dialog popped up saying to "Move camera to burglar" (or something like that, I paraphrase). It took me to a different house that was being broken into which was not the active household. It was playing the burglar music and everything. I've never seen that happen before.

Fix for save file incompatibilities that result in the Error Code 16 error message while saving.
