Are there ways to die accidently in criminal career track?

No they definitely can't be used in food. My impression was that they were solely a replacement for being an accidental death victim. But I know for sure two are gone. Weird.

I have had several books disapear from inventories (yes, I am sure that they weren't put down or away without me noticing) and a lap top and boom box (although it is possible that the lap top was taken out in public and not put back before the Sim went home).
I have a completely unsubstantiated theory that they magically turn into used newspapers in much the same way that a $50 placed in my purse turns into 5c.

Sounds familiar- especially since I often have two+ newspapers in the inventory which show the "Read" options etc. Which surely isn't possible, since they should expire when the new one arrives.
Who knows. Probably a "feature"

Nah, used newspapers will pile up in inventory. Before I was playing households in rounds and cleaning inventory every third day, I'd sometimes find 10 or so in a sim's inventory by the time I realized that all the books were gone from the bookcase.

I've been a bit too fussy about cleaning inventories, particularly fish, and veges that aren't the top quality for the next planting round. I was unable to even summon up three very nice potatoes in time for one opportunity. Hope that doesn't bork the restaurant opportunities. Witch Poofs had about 8 papers in her inventory.
I wondered if that was so sims could save the papers with the announcements of their own marriages and babies.
