I haven't tried to make a basement in TS3 yet, but in TS2 what I would do was put wallpaper on the foundation. Then I'd keep lowering the ground until I saw the bottom of the paper. This is probably still valid.

ETA: I made a stupid and made a new thread. Perhaps this can be merged into the existing Horror pics/vids thread, if that's not too much trouble.
At first, I didn't think to pick it up since it looked like a terrain doodad. Then as I was scrolling away, I did a doubletake. It looked suspiciously like a... egads.
So my Sim cheerily went up to it and swiped it to put it into his Hammerspace. This now redefines the term "butthurt noob" for I.
