I think that's as designed, considering that the galaxy in spore is pretty much based on real science.  The older stars would be closer to the core of the galaxy, and they'd be the ones to blow up and/or collapse first, so there would be more of them the closer you get to the center.

It's also partly a game mechanic to actually let you GET to the core, otherwise it would be a REALLY LONG TRIP.

I'm not sure how much real science is supposed to be in Spore, but if the galaxy is a model of our own, older stars aren't preferentially distributed near the centre.  Stars are born and die all the time, and actually black holes are formed from the most massive stars which have the shortest life cycle.  However, there are indeed more black holes toward the core not just due to the increased density of stars, but more importantly of mass.

The core is also a black hole, but apparently in Splotch, it isn't, so meh.

I noticed. x_X couldn't afford the Wormhole Key but I was trying to reach the Grox anyway... Bad idea.
