Do the variables "x" and "y" actually work, or will I need to plug in an arbitrary number?

Arbitrary number = x, y, and x+y. For instance.. x=5 y=7 so "x+y" should be 12

You could try what I do in that situation: take a different route. I suggest "in one of the manuals".
I solve problems by avoiding them. ;D
